To join the pipes, threading is important since it helps to join them. There are two parts to join, one which has threads on the outer side and the other has threads on the inner side. To get the proper joining, threads on both parts should align properly. There are mainly two types of threading standards that industries follow.

  • The British Standard Pipe thread (BSP)
  • The American National Pipe Thread (NPT)

Pipe threads offer mechanical connectivity and safety from the leaking of liquid. Both these standards are further dividing into two categories:

Parallel Threads-These threads have a constant diameter. These are also called straight threads. The diameter is denoted by the letter G. These provide mechanical connectivity of the pipes. However, they can’t provide the safety of liquid-proof sealing.

Taper Threads-These threads have varying diameters for example they can increase or decrease along the length of threads. The varying diameter is denoted as These threads offer tightly fitting seals that are leakproof.

Equipment for Pipe Threading

Hand-Held Threading Handle

In this threading handle, handles are attached to the stock. When you need to use round-shaped threading dies, then insert the die into it. On the pipe die stock, there are two sets for screws. One set holds the die and the other one helps to adjust the die. The stock also bears a mark on it. These marks correspond to the threading marks cutting dies.

Hand-Held Threading Machine

This threading machine is an electrical machine that is comparatively less expensive. It is used for repairing things. These machines can make the threads within the range of 1/8” to 2" in diameter. Right-hand dies also come with the machine. These dies are suitable for almost all pipe sizes. These machines are lightweight therefore easy to operate.

Threading Oils

Threading oil is used to cool down the cutting equipment and provide lubrication for easy threading.

Following are the uses of threading oil-

1.Keeps the cutting dies steadily on the work piece which helps to give the proper finishing to the threads.

2.Increase the longevity of the round cutting dies as the threading oil prevents the wear and tear of the dies.

3.Speed up the removal of the metal residue during the threading process.

4.Prevents corrosion of the dies and the threads created.

Threading Dies

The set of pipe dies stock contains dies within the range of 1⁄8” — 1” diameter. These dies are left and right-hand dies. The round threading dies come with marks like 1" R or 1" L on them.

Safety Measures for Using Pipe Threading Equipment

  • Check the condition of the threading machine before using it because using the damaged machine can cause you injuries.
  • Don’t use the machine if you are not in healthy condition.
  • Keep the working area and the working piece clean and in a proper position.
  • Don’t consider an untrained man to operate the machine.
  • Other persons should stay away at a sufficient distance from the threading area.
  • Wear the gloves and advised google when threading the pipes.
  • Follow the instruction given in the guidebook or by the company.

Conclusion

Different sets of pipe dies stock is available in the market. You can select the one that is suitable for your operations. The round-shaped threading dies can be used along with the threading handle and the drill machines. But above all, the process of threading should be carried in a fully safe environment. Also, you should follow the instructions to save yourself and the machinery from unwanted injuries.
